Sony’s persistent attempts to deprecate the efforts of providers of music downloads has come to a sudden end. Subscribing to the ‘if you can’t beat them, join them’ mentality, Sony BMG has signed what are sure to be massive deals with Nokia – the telephony provider – and We7, Peter Gabriel’s online free music venture to offer unlimited music downloads of its back catalogue.

This U-turn on Sony’s part is made all the more amazing by the scale of these music downloads agreements. Why the change of heart? Is it out of goodness? Unlikely.

Other companies are moving the same way and Napster, O2, Vodafone and 24-7 Entertainment are among a few notable examples of how the industry is slowly moving forward. The announcement of these deals for unlimited music downloads will hopefully speed the industry’s change from its current glacial rate.
