Ares – Greek God, NASA rocket, or filesharing software?
The name Ares is a popular one. Originally coined as the name of a particularly nasty and violet Greek God who instilled fear in the souls of his enemies (and friends, by all accounts), the Ares moniker has been used throughout history. Recently though it has become the calling sign for two rather different pieces of technology.
The Ares rocket is being designed by NASA to haul a heavy cargo to the moon in 2019. They’ve got some time to go yet before they polish up the design. Let’s hope that this one can stay together.
Arguably the most contemporary use for the name Ares is the P2P filesharing application enjoyed by millions worldwide. Ares make filesharing very easy indeed, and even manages to get around those pesky firewalls and College network restrictions. Due to its unique leaves-and-supernodes P2P architecture it is somewhat more difficult to detect than other filesharing systems. Network administrators are getting better, though!
